Kelly Lux is the Social Communications Manager for the Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool) and co-teaches a graduate level class on Social Media and Online Community Management. Kelly serves as social media strategist, content creator and curator, educator, consultant and all-around online relationship manager for the school. She was a member of the team that founded Syracuse University’s social media presence and served as community manager when they were named #2 college in online influence by Klout.
Kellogg School of Management @AutumnMcRey
Autumn McReynolds is the social media manager for the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. In addition to working with student bloggers and developing an overall strategy for the school’s main social media presence, she also handles day-to-day community management of prospective, current and former MBA students. While Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are her primary playgrounds, she’s currently working to help other teams to “join the conversation” by venturing to new platforms when appropriate.
Autumn also teaches a graduate course in social media marketing at Roosevelt University.

Cara manages social media for the Office of News and Communications and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and leads social media strategy for the university. Cara joined Duke in 2011 after serving as director of partnership initiatives for the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, where she focused on marketing, strategic initiatives, social media efforts and partnership relations. She worked previously at the City of Durham’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

Ma’ayan Plaut is the social media coordinator at Oberlin College, where she monitors and maintains the Oberlin Blogs and the Oberlin Stories Project, as well as Oberlin’s presence on several third-party social media sites (including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, and Youtube). She serves as a consultant, strategist, and cheerleader for individuals, departments, offices, and organizations around Oberlin’s campus interested in delving into social spaces.

Howard Greenstein is a Marketing Technology Strategy Consultant and President of the Harbrooke Group, which specializes in helping companies communicate with their customers and employees using the latest web technologies. Harbrooke clients have included Pearson Education, WE tv, New York Road Runners, CorpNet, Mommybites, DomainSkate, Wicked Start and numerous start-ups and small businesses. He also co-teaches “The Wired Nonprofit” graduate class at the George Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising at New York University’s SCPS.
Greenstein’s career has spanned organizations including the Twin Towers Fund, Microsoft, NYU, and several start-ups. He has been a Contributing Editor on Inc.Com since 2008. A business development leader for the past 6 years, Michael has successfully launched sales strategies for a seaplane operation in Greece, led program development for a global education non-profit in Ontario, helped launch a gamification platform in Mountain View, CA and recently was founding Executive Director of metabridge in British Columbia. metabridge has quickly become a leading Canadian technology association that helps start-ups connect to the Silicon Valley. Today Michael heads up business development for HootSuite University at HootSuite Media in Vancouver.
Michael can also be found co-hosting TEDx conferences and is also a proud board member of @motionball, supporting Special Olympics Canada.
Our questions are:
- What is “social media in higher education”? Obviously the big demographic of social network users are people around the age of 18-24, so how do you actually teach them?
- Do most students in your class already use Twitter and other social networks effectively prior to taking your class?
- Should all higher education institutions teach social media at an elementary level? Or is it up to the individual.
